Three Margarets Laura E Richards 9781532944895 Books
My grandmother (born 1892) loved the works of Laura E. Richards and recommended them to her granddaughters. As a grandson, I was always curious about them, but not curious enough to read them. We had three of the six books in the Margaret series, but in spite of my grandmother's strenuous efforts in the 1960s, it was impossible for her to find the others in used book stores and libraries. Now they are all available at no charge through the Kindle. Depending on your tolerance for sentimentality and moralizing, this may or may not be a good thing!"The Three Margarets" is the first of the Margaret series, which dates from the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. It was written for adolescent girls at a time when good manners, consideration for others and pre-feminist self-improvement were ideals. The gap between then and now may be unbridgeable. The three Margarets -- Margaret, Peggy and Rita -- are cousins from the East, West and Cuba. They convene at Fernley Hall, the charming, manorial home of their uncle for a summer and become close friends. Their differences stimulate them to learn from each other. Margaret is the near-saint around whom the other two young women orbit. Her modesty, insight, striving and clear morals are an inspiration to all. There are a few "adventures," but nothing that will rattle anyone's teeth.
